The principle of operation of the variator.

A variator is a key part of a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and is used in most scooters, ATVs and some modern cars. The variator allows the engine to operate at optimal power and efficiency under various conditions, smoothly and continuously changing the gear ratio depending on the vehicle’s speed and engine RPM.

In the variator, rollers move along (rolling) to open or close the variator and transmit the engine’s power to the drive system. The rollers move along ramps located inside the variator. Depending on the angle of inclination or slope of the ramps, the characteristics and result on our vehicle will be different.

When the rollers in the variator are thrown to the ends of the variator basket, and the belt is forced to rise along the face of the variator, more of the belt is pulled towards the front of the system. For this to happen, the torque driver is forced to gather through the torque spring. This spring keeps the belt under constant tension against the surfaces of the torque driver.
